Welcome to The Den!
Welcome to The Den :: A Wellness Place! If you haven't heard about what we're bringing to Abilene, check out these posts! Find out about the new facility we're opening, how renovations are going, and how we chose how to name our "baby".
Where are we with Abilene's newest wellness facility?
It has been a busy few weeks since I last posted an update on my Doula Abilene website!
Labor was very much stop and go - the kind where if this was an actual pregnancy, the labor and delivery nurses would be sending you home and telling you, "Nope. It's isn't time yet."
HOWEVER, we have instituted a little augmentation of our own and hired some help to make this transition smoother and easier! We have welcomed Sparrowhawk Handyman Services aboard to help us get The Den up and running. Owned and operated by Joseph McDonald, Sparrowhawk offers a variety of services such as painting, repairs, carpentry, etc right here in Abilene.
When we ran into the kinks and stress that comes with doing a major renovation, Joseph was my top pick to come in and assist. He and his wife are actually past students from my birth classes and I also served as their doula when their baby was born a few months ago.
You can't walk through childbirth with a family and not become friends. Through my interactions with Joseph as a business owner myself, I knew that I could trust him to get the job done right. He has been working this week on prepping our cabinets to be painted!
The biggest change happening inside this Historic Abilene Landmark is occurring in the back bathrooms. They were so, so bad. There are no words - it can only be described in photos; and this is my favorite.
We're excited that we'll be able to start tackling the exterior soon, too. We had to apply to the Abilene Landmarks Commission just to be able to paint and freshen the place up. The purpose of the Commission is to make sure that the integrity of external features for historical landmarks are maintained.
I attended the a hearing at City Hall yesterday, kids in tow, to present our request to the Commission. I was pretty nervous about the kids and their behavior, but I went armed with snacks, books and coloring activities to keep them quite - true mom style! Not only did the Commission commend me for the kids' behavior (BRAG ALERT - not even tryin' to be modest, 'cause it's a BIG deal! HA!), but they also approved our requests!
Slowly, but surely, things are coming together. This has been and will continue to be a true labor of love. I'll update again SOON!
